About

I wrote this program originally for a friend who works as an IT administrator. His job required him to drive to external locations (sites), servicing computers and other technical duties, which also required him to keep track of his mileage for reimbursement (so many cents per mile) at the end of the month. He needed a way to calculate his Total Monthly Mileage and store Locations, Dates, and Visits per location per date. He had originally been keeping track of this information manually, in a text file. When I was able to create this program for him, I figured why not share it with others who have the same dilemma.

The title “Monthly Mileage Calculator” is just a temporary name until I can find a more suited description of the program and what its intentions are. The other reason I posted this program, is because I wanted to get some experience in supporting software… I want to be able to expand my knowledge and the usability of the program.

Feedback is very necessary for the continued development of the program.

Features Explained

  • Storing Locations: Your locations are stored with their static (non-changing) distance from the workplace –> location. This allows you to specify if you only went TO a location and not FROM it back to the workplace.
  • Native Information: Every time you Go! to a location, it logs the Date and how many times you’ve already visited that location on that specific date.
  • Output: When you type: Ctrl + S, the program will display your total mileage with all of the Native information included.
  • Temporary Nature: When a month is over, the program will prompt you to clear the database and start over. If you don’t want to, it will put itself into a read-only mode. You can opt-out of the read-only mode if you like, but it isn’t recommended. I explain this mode in full detail in the MMC Manual, which is included with the setup.
  • MMC Manual: It is recommended that you read the manual first so you know how to operate the program. The interface may be simple, but in order to use all of its functionality you need to learn about its 4 keyboard commands. For first time use, read the “Keyboard Commands” and “Normal Usage” sections in the manual.
  • Odds and Ends: You’ll notice no Minimize, Maximize, or Close button on the interface. This was done because Minimizing and Maximizing the program are unnecessary. To close the program, all you have to do is hit the Esc key on your keyboard. You can read the “Keyboard Commands” section in the manual for more details.

Thanks for the comment. No one has said anything in over a year, I was beginning to think no one liked it.
